Fall 2009 Special Education Changes
These materials summarize recent changes in IEP and special education procedures. They are intended as a quick reference for AEA staff and for sharing with LEA colleagues. Please note the continued emphasis on statewide procedures with materials developed by the Iowa Department of Education in collaboration with all of the AEAs. This emphasis allows for consistency statewide that is helpful to children and families, and it also makes possible the creation of high quality digital and other tools to support educators.

Annual changes made to Web IEP to reflect programming changes that address new IEP procedures. The changes for this year are minimal, when compared to the many significant changes which were rolled out last year. Other changes will roll out during the year.

Special Education Classroom Names

Hello!

As many of you know, the names of Special Education classrooms have been directed by the State Department of Education to make sure our special education programs and classrooms do not have the language of "levels" or 'special education" in the titles. As a result of teacher and adminstrative feedback please note the following:

All special education programs/classrooms will be known as "Student Support Services". The classrooms that were previously Level 1 programs will have that new title. Classrooms that have the focus of behavior, autism, functional academic, or functional life skills will also use the same name. As we have conversations with families and other staff we know what classroom has what type of focus and certainly can use the previous language in our conversations.

This new language, "Student Support Services" will be used in student handbooks, classroom names, websites, and anything that goes out in print.

Welcome!

Welcome to the 2009/2010 school year! I hope this finds all of you having enjoyed some well deserved time away from the classroom. I am looking forward to our working together this year in supporting students and families within in the Linn Mar Community!

This blog site will be up and running for the 2009/2010 school year. The purpose of this site is to share information in a timely fashion with each other and also provide an opportunity for each of you to share information with the rest of us!

As we all know, if one person has a question...there are at least two more people out there with the same question! I will be "watching" this blog on a weekly basis posting answers to questions and providing updated information in the land of Special Education. The beauty of this blog is that the postings can stay up all year! Therefore for those of us that may not always remember what was said in a previous message we can look back on this blog and find out the answers!

Please feel free to post thoughts and any questions that may arise during the school year!

Thank you for your service to all and have a great school year!

Julie
