IEP Tip Number 2:

Did you know....

Did you know that when you (as the teacher responsible for the IEP) write a goal on an IEP that you become responsible for setting up the graph for progress monitoring? As an example if you are writing an IEP at the end of the school year you would still need to set the graph with the baseline information that you have for writing the goal. It is almost impossible for the next year's teacher to set up a graph with no baseline data available. Best practice is to have the graph set up prior to submitting the IEP.

  1. I agree. It's especially important when you are in a transition year. . . for me it would be from preschool to kindergarten. I like to be sure the receiving teacher gets as much information from me as possible

  2. I also find it very frustrating when you get an IEP from another school district without the graphs updated or even started!

  3. It really makes a big difference for a teacher in a transition year. I do have to admit this is something I need to remember to do!!

  4. Would it be acceptable (and legal), if the IEP is late in the school year, to contact the receiving teacher and get their input on how to word the goal and set up the graph? We all do it a bit differently. I'd like to send my students to new teachers with a smooth and seamless transition.

  5. Peggy -- I think it would be COMPLETELY acceptable to contact the receiving teacher and get input from them!! As an 8th grade teacher, we especially try to take 9th grade teachers requests into consideration later in the year. For example; this year we will compose math goals in the spring using the algebraic probe that the high school uses. This will help them in their own progress monitoring. We also (try to) use the same (or similar) accommodations so that they go to the high school with an IEP that can be easily monitored by staff. Additionally, I think working collaboratively with the receiving teacher to compose the IEP will only benefit the student and ease the transition process.
